Acceptable Use Policy for Cass City Public Schools
 
The use of technology is a privilege and as such may be revoked at any time for inappropriate use.   Technology is a tool intended as an
educational enhancement.   
 
Hardware and Software
 
Each user has the privilege to make use of all authorized hardware and software found on school grounds in order to facilitate personal
academic growth in technology and a greater understanding of the utilization of technology.
 
It is the user's responsibility to:
 
•  Accept the responsibility for the preservation and care of the hardware and/or software, including all files stored or printed under
his/her user account. Only those users with instruction or prior experience shall be authorized to use any hardware or software.
•  Obtain permission from the Technology Director to install software on any school equipment. The software must be removed from
the hardware it was installed on upon completion of use. Each user is responsible for any software that he/she installs on the
hardware.
•  Make sure no hardware or software is destroyed, modified or abused in any way.
•  Keep programs of a viral nature off any school equipment. The user will be held accountable for any deliberate attempts at
knowingly, installing and/or running a computer virus.
•  Keep pornographic materials, inappropriate text files and files known to carry harmful viruses off school premises.
•  Keep hardware and software from being removed from school premises without prior consent from the Technology Director.
•  Obtain written permission from the Technology Director prior to removing, relocating, or modifying any hardware or software. The
Technology Director will oversee all repairs to equipment done on school grounds.
•  Make sure that all food and drinks are kept away from all hardware and software.
 
Printers
 
Each user has the privilege to access a printer in order to produce quality documents pertaining to his/her respective topic to facilitate personal growth
in technology and visual presentation.
 
It is the user's responsibility to:
 
•  Monitor all printed documents. A log of printed documents is kept on file in the file server. Each user logged onto the network will be
responsible for all files printed under his/her user account.
•  Ensure printed documents do not exceed twenty (20) pages in length. A user must obtain permission prior to printing documents
exceeding this length.
•  Keep images containing pornographic material or inappropriate material otherwise deemed inappropriate for school use from being
printed on any printer on school premises.
•  Only print class related material.   Violations may result in an assessment of charges and/or loss of privileges. 
 
Internet
 
The goal of participation in the Internet is to assist in the gathering, collaboration, and/or exchange of information.
 
Cass City Public Schools has and will continue to comply with the requirements of the Children’s Internet Protection Act, as codified at 47 U.S.C. §
254(h) and (1).  The District is committed to assuring the safe conduct of all students while online and has a comprehensive policy about the proper
use of our technological resources.
 
It is the District’s intent to preserve network bandwidth and improve network response times by limiting Internet access to educational-related sites. 
The filtering software used to block and filter access to the Internet from pornographic and obscene sites is DansGuardian, ensuring compliance with
District policies and maintaining a positive environment.
 
Users have the privilege to access the Internet to facilitate diversity and personal growth in technology, information gathering skills, and
communication skills. Using the Internet for any of the following is prohibited: commercial or for-profit purposes, extensive use for personal and
private business, product advertisement or political lobbying.
 
It is the user's responsibility to:
 
•  Access the Internet in a responsible manner
•  Respect the CIPA mandated content filter that is in place.
•  Report any violations of the use of the Internet to a staff member and/or the Technology Director. Hate mail, harassment,
discriminatory remarks, and other anti-social behaviors are prohibited on the Internet.
•  Avoid intentionally seeking information on, obtaining copies of, modifying files, data or passwords belonging to other users, or
misrepresenting other users on the Internet.
•  Refrain from using the Internet to access any pornographic material, inappropriate text files, or files dangerous to the integrity of the
local area network or the Internet.
•  Maintain the integrity of the private electronic mail system by reporting all violations of privacy.
•  Ensure all e-mail sent or received by him/her does not contain pornographic material, inappropriate information, or text-encoded files
that are potentially dangerous to the integrity of the local area network, Cass City Public Schools or the Internet.
•  Keep copyrighted software of any kind from entering the local network via the Internet.

It is the Technology Director's responsibility to:
 
•  Maintain the privacy and security of the District’s data systems.
•  Review all audit trails created by the Microsoft ISA software. He is responsible for determining and uncovering incorrect usage of the network
and also for informing other faculty members and the user in question.
 
Discipline
 
The guidelines on the preceding pages are not all-inclusive. A user who commits an act of misconduct, which is not listed, may also be subject to
disciplinary action.
 
Non-student/community users are responsible for abiding by all the policies and procedures set forth in this document. Failure to do so may result in
the loss of use privileges.
 
Disciplinary actions are based on the discipline procedures of Cass City Public Schools. Staff intervention strategies such as teacher/student
conferences, auxiliary staff/student intervention and teacher/parent contacts are to be made for acceptable use policy violations when referring for
administrative action. Any or all of the following intervention strategies and disciplinary actions may be used by administrators.
 
 
 
Required Actions:
 
•  Administrator/student conference or reprimand with documentation.
•  Administrator/parent contact.
 
Additional Actions as Deemed Appropriate:
 
•  Require user to seek assistance in learning the proper procedures before being allowed to use technological equipment at Cass City Public
Schools.
•  Confiscate inappropriate item(s).
•  Require user to make full financial restitution.
•  Ban user from access to the Internet for one (1) week, (1) month, (1) year
•  Ban user from using all computer equipment, networks, or Internet.
•  Assign user in-school suspension from one (1) to five (5) days.
•  Establish a behavior contract.
•  Refer user to appropriate support staff or agencies.
•  Utilize other intervention strategies as needed.
 
Repeat violations may warrant permanent removal of use privileges on the Cass City Public School local area network (LAN) and Internet networks.
 
Students and Parents will review and sign the AUP at the beginning of every school year before they have access to District computer resources.
