Mr. Hobbs

Achievement is more important than ability!

Mr. Hobbs has taught elementary music in the Cass City Public Schools since fall of 1978. He is married and has four children. In the early days he directed the high school choir, taught ninth-grade English, co-directed the musical, coached football and basketball, supervised the ski club, and advised the yearbook. More recently, Mr. Hobbs has tried to demonstrate student excellence in performance by giving a spring musical with third grade performers. The Hobbs children have a D. J. business and Mr. Hobbs helps them when they go out.

Mr. Hobbs and his family have attended 4 different churches since living in the Cass City area. He and some of his children have always been active in special music in those churches. Prior to coming to Cass City, Mr. Hobbs excelled in the vocal music. He has sung with the Detroit Symphony, and has been a soloist with the West Shore Symphony, C.M.U. Concert Choir, Oakland University Chorale, and many other small groups. He played the lead role, "Tevye" in the T.A.C.A. production of Fiddler on the Roof. Prior to finishing his formal music education Mr. Hobbs played in a few rock bands and even made a pretty good living playing in night clubs as a folk singer in the down river section of the Blue Water Area. After a profound religious experience, Mr. Hobbs began dabbling in writing Christian music. One song, "Come Bless the Lord" was recorded and published by Living Truth, a group with local connections, that has gotten recognition, and radio air-play, throughout the state and beyond.

In the mid-eighties, Mr. Hobbs completed a Master's degree in Counseling at C.M.U. This degree and the current teaching assignment in the Peer Counseling/Mediation area in the high school, are a good fit. It is hoped that a successful "Peer" program will help students and keep some of the common problems out of the front office.

ANNUAL AND NEWSPAPER

We have a fine yearbook and newspaper. The work is done for both
publications in one class. Digital cameras and various publishing programs allow us to accomplish a great deal and we have fun learning how to use technology.

PEER GROUP STUDIES
Teens usually don’t share their problems with an adult first. They are more likely to share their troubling situation with a friend, or peer. The Peer I, II, and III classes train students to become helpers. Teachers and parents are busy, but the peer counselors are trained to be patient and listen to the whole story.

LIFE SKILLS
The first semester is all about food, nutrition, kitchen and food safety, food preparation and menu planning. The second semester is more about family relations, raising children, learning to make good life decisions, and overcoming life’s common challenges like earning a living and getting along with others.

POINT OF PRIDE
The success of our Peer Counseling program.
