What is Success?

To laugh often and much;
To win the respect of intelligent people
and the affection of children;
To earn the appreciation of honest critics
and endure the betrayal of false friends;
To appreciate beauty;
To find the best in others;
To leave the world a bit better,
whether by a healthy child, a garden
patch or a redeemed social condition;
To know even one life has breathed easier
because you have lived;
This is to have succeeded.
-Ralph Waldo Emerson-

Greetings Reader!
Over the past 20 years I have been teaching at Cass City High School. For many of those years, I have been teaching English 11. By the time the students have reached their junior year, they have accomplished a tremendous amount. They have survived, and they have succeeded! I appreciate the effort that went into making the students’ years of school a success.

Though success to some is measured in grades or accomplishments, I tend to look beyond these and include the personal growth in knowledge, skill and character that have been demonstrated. Emerson describes so well the many aspects of success. I am proud of the students who have graduated from Cass City and proud to be teaching those who are currently enrolled in eleventh grade English.

Alumni: Stop in and see me. I would like to hear what you’ve been up to.

Parents: Stop in and see me. I would like to hear what your concerns and hopes are for your son or daughter.

Take care of yourself and may your days be blessed.

Respectfully yours, Jane Reif
